ZExplorer works on your Mac. Its only connection is an update check you can turn off: no analytics, no account.
1. Summary
ZExplorer is a file manager that runs on your Mac. It never sends file names, paths, file contents or usage data anywhere, collects no analytics, shows no ads and needs no account. The only connection it makes on its own is a check for new versions, described below, which you can turn off.
2. Files and folders
ZExplorer reads folder listings, icons, previews and file information to show them to you, and carries out what you ask (copy, move, rename, Move to Trash, compress, extract). All of it happens on the Mac. The Subfolders and This Mac search scopes use macOS's own Spotlight.
3. macOS permissions
macOS asks before ZExplorer can access Desktop, Documents, Downloads, removable drives and network drives. ZExplorer may also ask to control Terminal and Finder (Apple Events) to open SSH/SFTP connections in Terminal.app and to reveal items in Finder. Review or revoke these in System Settings › Privacy & Security. On first launch macOS also asks whether ZExplorer may show notifications; they are used only to announce a new version.
4. iPhone, iPad and cameras
When you import from a device connected by cable, ZExplorer reads its photos and videos through macOS Image Capture and copies them straight into the folder you chose on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded. ZExplorer deletes photos from the device only when you turn on Delete from device after import.
5. Data kept on your Mac
ZExplorer keeps its settings in the macOS preferences system (domain com.zsoft.ZExplorer): the favorites you add, apps pinned to the top bar, pane sizes, sort order, column widths the interface language, and the state of the update check (when it last ran, whether it worked, and the newest version found). This data stays on the Mac.
6. Terminal and SSH
The built-in terminal runs your login shell with your account's privileges, like Terminal.app. SSH and SFTP connections are made by OpenSSH with your keys, passwords and ~/.ssh/config; ZExplorer neither stores nor sends them. What the commands you type send over the network is up to those commands, not ZExplorer.
7. Update check
Unless you turn it off, ZExplorer checks for a new version at most once a day, starting a minute after it opens. You can also check at any time with ZExplorer › Check for Updates… or the Check Now button in Settings.
A check downloads one small file, https://cdn.z-cms.org/zexplorer/manifest.json, which describes the latest release. The request carries only the app's name, version and build number (in the User-Agent), uses no cookies or stored cache, and contains no file names, paths, file contents, settings or identifiers. As with any web request, the server sees your IP address.
When a newer version exists, ZExplorer shows a notification (once per version) and a download item in the app menu. It never downloads or installs the update by itself: clicking opens the installer link in your browser, and you decide whether to install. A failed check, for example while offline, is only noted in the system log on your Mac.
To stop the automatic check, turn off Check for updates automatically (daily) in ZExplorer › Settings… › Updates. ZExplorer sends no crash reports and fetches no other content.
