Step by step

Install and open ZExplorer

  1. Step 1

    Open the installer

Open ZExplorer-0.2.0-universal.pkg, the file you just downloaded (usually in Downloads).

The installer is Developer ID signed and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it normally — no need to turn off Gatekeeper.

  2. Step 2

    Install

Click Continue → Install and enter your Mac's administrator password. ZExplorer.app is installed in /Applications.

  3. Step 3

    Open ZExplorer

Open ZExplorer from Applications, Launchpad or Spotlight (⌘Space, type ZExplorer).

  4. Step 4

    Allow access to your folders

The first time you open Desktop, Documents, Downloads or an external drive, macOS asks “ZExplorer would like to access files in…”. Click Allow.

System SettingsPrivacy & SecurityFiles and Folders

To let ZExplorer open every folder without asking place by place, give it Full Disk Access in the same Privacy & Security pane.

  5. Step 5

    Pick a language (optional)

Open ZExplorer › Settings… (⌘,) and choose English, Tiếng Việt, 日本語, 한국어 or Automatic. ZExplorer offers to relaunch to apply it.

  6. Step 6

Use it instead of Finder (optional)

ZExplorer › Default File Viewer… makes ZExplorer receive “Show in Finder” requests from other apps and opened folders. Choose it again to go back to Finder. Finder keeps running for the desktop.

Something not right?

  • A network folder does not updateNetwork shares do not report changes to macOS. Press ⌘R to reload.
  • Spotlight search finds nothingSpotlight may still be indexing, or the location is excluded in System Settings › Spotlight. Use the This Folder scope instead.
  • A drive will not ejectAn app or the built-in terminal may still be using it. Close terminal tabs inside that drive and try again.

Upgrading

ZExplorer checks once a day whether a new version is out and shows a notification when there is one; ZExplorer › Check for Updates… checks right away. Download the new installer and install over the version you have — no need to remove the old one. Quit ZExplorer first. Your Favorites, pinned apps, pane sizes and language are kept. The daily check can be turned off in ZExplorer › Settings… › Updates; see What's new for what changed.

Uninstalling

  1. If you made ZExplorer the default file viewer, choose ZExplorer › Default File Viewer… again to go back to Finder.
  2. Quit ZExplorer (⌘Q).
  3. Drag /Applications/ZExplorer.app to the Trash.
  4. To remove its settings too, delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.zsoft.ZExplorer.plist.
